If you have just brought an older dog into your home, then it might well be that it needs to be housebroken. If the dog starts going to the bathroom inside the house, then this could be for a few reasons. First of all it could simply be that the dog has never been trained properly, and secondly that it has gone through some stressful circumstances in its life that have led to it going to the toilet inside the house. As such you will need to train the dog yourself. Here are ways to housebreak an older dog.

There are three times of the day that a dog would usually go to the toilet. This will be in the morning when you first get up, in the evening before they go off to sleep, and about 30 minutes to an hour straight after they had eaten. These will therefore be the times when you have to watch out specifically for them going to the toilet.

You need to be doing this and doing it on a regular basis. If you bring your dog outside and they end up doing the right thing and using the toilet in the right place and at the right time then you should make sure that you offer them some praise by giving them a little edible treat and stroking them or patting them on the head.

When the dog is in the house, try to keep it in your sight at all times. Make sure that you also restrict the animal to certain places within the house, preferably near to the doorway you take them out.

Any time that you do bring the dog outside and they have not used the toilet as you might expect them to have after about 15 or 20 minutes, then you should simply bring them back inside and return outside again about 20 minutes afterwards.

You also need to ensure that that you feed the dog at certain times of the day each day. This needs to be able to fit around your own schedule and needs to be at the same time every day of each week. You should make sure that you bring the animal outside half an hour to an hour after each meal.

If the dog does have an accident inside the house then you need to punish it in the correct way. Be firm but do not frighten the animal or go over the top and be physical with it. If you follow these tips correctly your dog should learn about using the toilet in the correct way.
